Kvitova awarded Sydney International wildcard





Sydney (dpa) - Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova has been awarded a wildcard for the Sydney International, organizers said on Saturday.



 
"I'm really looking forward to being back in Sydney this year," the the world number seven said in a statement. "It's one of my favourite stops on the calendar and I love the conditions there.
"Hopefully I can make a great start to the year and get in some important matches ahead of the Australian Open."
The 28-year-old Czech has had an up-and-down year, winning five WTA titles but crashing out in the early rounds of all the Grand Slams.
She joins a strong field for the tournament, which begins on January 6 at Sydney's Olympic Park, including defending champion and three-time Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber, world number one Simona Halep and US Open winner Naomi Osaka.
Also awarded wildcards were Australia's world number 35 Daria Gavrilova, 2011 US Open winner Samantha Stosur and Ajla Tomljanovic. In the men's draw, Australia's Jordan Thompson and Alexei Popyrin were given wildcards.
