Libya since Kadhafi's fall



TRIPOLI- Key events since the overthrow and killing of Libya's strongman Moamer Kadhafi in October, 2011, after 42 years in power:
OCTOBER, 2011
- 20: The ousted leader is captured and killed in his hometown Sirte.
He had been faced since early February 2011 with a popular uprising which started in Benghazi and turned into a nationwide conflict that led to Tripoli's fall in August, with the help of NATO air strikes from March.



Kadhafi was the first leader to be killed in the so-called Arab Spring.
- 23: The new ruling National Transitional Council declares the "total liberation" of Libya and says more than 30,000 were killed in the conflict.
- 31: NATO's mission officially ends.
NOVEMBER
- 19: Arrest in southern Libya of Seif al-Islam, Kadhafi's son and one-time heir apparent.
- 22: Interim premier Abdel Rahim al-Kib announces his new cabinet line-up.
DECEMBER
- 12-13: Hundreds protest in Benghazi against the NTC, accusing it of a lack of transparency and criticising its composition.
JANUARY, 2012
- 26: Rights groups charge that Libyan militias and the regular army have been torturing, and sometimes killing, Kadhafi loyalists.
- 28: The NTC adopts a new electoral law under which the country is to form a constituent assembly in June.
FEBRUARY
- 12: Tribal clashes erupt in Libya's remote southeastern desert, with more than 100 killed in two weeks.
- 20: In Misrata, east of Tripoli, residents vote to elect a local council, in Libya's first polls in more than 40 years.
MARCH
- 6: Tribal and political leaders in Benghazi declare the oil-rich Cyrenaica region autonomous and call for a return to federalism, raising fears the country may break up.
- 17: Abdullah al-Senussi, Kadhafi's spymaster who is wanted by the International Criminal Court, arrested in Mauritania.
- 31: A ceasefire deal is struck between rival tribes at Sabha in the south after almost a week of deadly clashes in which more than 147 are killed.
APRIL
- 2-4: Clashes in the west kill at least 18 people. The interim government struggles to impose its authority on brigades comprising of former rebels who fought against Kadhafi's forces and who now have become a law unto themselves.
- 29: The NTC decides the interim government should stay in place, notably to ensure the success of June elections for a constituent assembly.
MAY
- 8: Security forces repel armed demonstrators who had surrounded and stormed government headquarters in Tripoli.
JUNE
4: A militia of Libyan ex-rebels seize control of the runway at Tripoli International Airport, surrounding aircraft with tanks and grounding all flights after their leader's apparent arrest.
A military court hands stiff prison terms to 19 Ukrainians, three nationals from Belarus and two Russians accused of serving as mercenaries for Kadhafi.
