Merkel lauds UN's global migration accord as 'milestone'

Marrakech, Morocco (dpa) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel has described the UN's global migration accord as a "milestone" in developing a multi-lateral approach to migration.

Speaking in the Moroccan city of Marrakech, Merkel said the accord is a major step in the battle against human smugglers. She added that migration is a normal phenomenon, "and when it's legal, also good."
She described economic migration as something that countries like Germany could benefit from, and said that global migration could not be tackled by individual countries, but only by the international community as a whole.
