Minister: Islamist group believed responsible for Sri Lanka's attacks

Colombo (dpa) – An Islamist group named by local intelligence services was strongly believed to be responsible for Sri Lanka's multiple suicide attacks which has claimed over 290 lives, a cabinet minister said on Monday.

Government spokesman and Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne told a news conference that an organization identified as the National Thowheeth Jamath were strongly believed to be responsible for Sunday's attacks carried out by seven suicide bombers.
The group was named in a police intelligence report on April 11,  but no action had been taken by the police to take necessary precautions he said.
"We believe there was international support for this type of attack. Such attacks cannot be carried out without such support," Senaratne said.
