Somalia Islamists shut down radio station

MOGADISHU - Somalia's hardline Islamist group Shebab on Wednesday closed down a radio station in the central town of Baidoa after banning non-Islamic music, journalists told AFP.
The Shebab ordered the closure of Radio Warsan, a local FM station in Baidoa, and detained the radio's director.

"We are not exactly sure why they have ordered the closure of our radio but there had been some demands by the Islamists recently," Mohamed Adawe, a reporter with the radio, said by phone.
"They have asked radio stations to stop airing advertisements with music and to broadcast the call for prayer by the main mosque instead," he said.
"They also arrested the director of the radio, Hilal Sheikh Shuayb," he said, explaining that the station had recently used such an advertisement.
Baidoa is a town located some 250 kilometres (155 miles) northwest of Mogadishu and is the former seat of the internationally-backed transitional federal parliament.
The Shebab and allied hardline Islamists control large swathes of southern and central Somalia, where they have closed down several radio stations and imposed tough restrictions on other media outlets.
Somalia is one of the world's most dangerous countries for journalists. Six of them have been killed since the start of the year and two foreign reporters -- a Canadian and an Australian -- have been held hostage for more than a year.
