Syria calls for new Iraqi government to restore security



DAMASCUS- Syria's President Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday urged the formation of a new Iraqi government to restore security, in a meeting with the head of Iraq's main conservative Shiite political party.
Assad met Ammar al-Hakim, the chief of the Supreme Iraqi Islamic Council (SIIC) which has close ties to Iran, and discussed efforts to form a new government, Syria's official SANA news agency reported.

He hoped "Iraq's political forces manage to reach a common position in order to form a national government that acts in the interests of the people and represents a prelude to the return of security and stability in Iraq and the wider region."
Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari warned on Monday that prolonged "bickering" over who should be the war-torn country's prime minister, four months after an inconclusive election, was angering the public and risked stoking deadly street riots.
