Syrian rights activist jailed

DAMASCUS- A military court has sentenced a human rights activist to one year in jail on charges of membership in a "secret" organisation, Syrian human rights groups reported on Thursday.
Abdel Hafiz Abdel Rahman, a member of the Organisation of Human Rights in Syria, was arrested in March at his home in the northern city of Aleppo and security forces seized books, CDs and his cell phone, a statement said.

He was convicted on charges of "membership in a secret organisation," by a military court in Aleppo, said the statement signed by several Syrian rights groups, who called for the annulment of the verdict.
