Three gunmen killed in anti-terrorism operation in North Caucasus

MOSCOW (dpa)- Russian security forces killed three gunmen in an anti-terrorism operation in the volatile North Caucasus region, state news agency TASS reported Sunday.
The gunmen were holed up in an apartment building in the southern republic of Dagestan and engaged in a firefight with security forces.

One of the gunmen was identified, the report said, adding that he was linked to several murders. There was no immediate evidence of their links to Islamist extremists.
However, groups with close links to Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq remain active in Chechnya and other regions in the North Caucasus.
Russian forces and Islamist insurgents seeking to establish an independent emirate have fought for control of the Caucasus region for more than two decades.
In recent years, the violence has increasingly spread from Chechnya to the adjacent provinces of Dagestan, Ingushetia and Ossetia, which like Chechnya are home to various mainly Muslim ethnic groups.
