Turkey's Erdogan offers support: 'My brother Maduro! Stand tall'

Istanbul (dpa) - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has thrown his support behind Venezuela's Nicolas Maduro, after an opposition leader declared himself interim president.

"My brother Maduro! Stand tall, we stand by you," Erdogan told Maduro in a phone call, the Turkish president's spokesman said early Thursday.
Spokesman Ibrahim Kalin used the hashtag #WeAreMADURO to express Turkey's solidarity with the embattled Venezuelan leader.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said in an interview to broadcaster A Haber on Thursday that some Latin American countries and the United States "have recently been constantly interfering in Venezuela's domestic affairs."
"There is an elected president there [Venezuela]," Cavusoglu said, adding that "it is a weird situation" that a de facto leader is announced, according to state news agency Anadolu.
Maduro said on Wednesday his country was severing diplomatic relations with the US after Washington and several other countries recognized Juan Guaido, the head of Venezuela's opposition-dominated National Assembly, as interim president.
