UN chief announces follow-on Covid donor event, calls for 5x funds

Brussels - Around 40 billion dollars is needed globally to develop the necessary tools to fight the coronavirus, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres tells an international donor conference.

"It will require the most massive public health effort in history," Guterres says.
He welcomes Monday's funding pledges aimed at reaching an initial 7.5 billion euros (8.2 billion dollars), calling this a "down-payment for developing the new tools at the speed needed."
"But to reach everyone, everywhere, we will likely need five times that amount," Guterres adds. A follow-on pledging conference will take place in late May, he announces.
