US to talk with Russia over S-300 missile system transfer to Syria

WASHINGTON (dpa)- The United States will hold talks with Russia that will include discussions over Moscow's plans to transfer the S-300 air defence system to Syria, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday.
"There are many topics we will talk about with the Russians, I'm very confident that their latest decision to move the S-300 will be amongst them," Pompeo said in New York ahead of a busy week at the United Nations General Assembly.

"We are trying to find every place we can where there is common ground where we can work with the Russians. We are finding lots of places where they are working against American interests. And we will hold them accountable for so doing," Pompeo said.
He indicated he could meet his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov.
Russia said it plans to deliver the surface-to-air missile defence system within the next weeks.
The announcement followed the accidental downing of a Russian aircraft by the Syrian military, using less advanced weapons, after Israeli jets attacked Syrian targets.
All 15 people on board the Russian plane were killed.
Russia says Israel failed to give advanced warning of strikes on its key Middle Eastern ally in Damascus, causing tensions between the two nations.
Moscow had reportedly declined to deliver the S-300 in the past, citing Israeli concerns.
Russia also has an S-400, an even more advanced system, which it deploys in Syria at its bases in the country.
