Uruguay author Mario Benedetti dead at 88

MONTEVIDEO - Author and poet Mario Benedetti, one of the Spanish-speaking world's leading literary voices, died Sunday at his home in Uruguay's capital, family and friends said. He was 88.
One of his country's most prolific writers, Benedetti was a leading figure in the postwar "Generation of '45" and continued working until his final days.

In September, he published "Testigo de uno mismo" ("Witness for Oneself") and also was recently working on a poetry collection entitled "Biografia para encontrarme" ("Finding Myself in Life's Story").
While vastly better known in the Spanish-speaking world than in English, Benedetti's "The Truce" (1960) was translated into more than a dozen languages.
