Uruguay runoff election likely in November: polls



WASHINGTON - Former guerrilla leader Jose Mujica is ahead of his rivals in Sunday's presidential election, but shy of the 50 percent of the votes needed to avoid a November runoff, according to television exit polls.
"There will be a runoff," said Channel 12 pollster Luis Gonzalez.

The channel's exit polls gave the incumbent Broad Front party candidate, aged 74, 47 percent of the votes, followed by the conservative former president Luis Lacalle, 68, with 30 percent and Pedro Bordaberry, with 17 percent.
Factum Poll official Oscar Botinelli gave Mujica 47-49 percent of the vote, Lacalle 29-31 percent and Bordaberry 17-18 percent.
A November 29 runoff would be held between the two top vote getters -- Mujica and Lacalle.
Polls officially closed at 2130 GMT and official results are expected one hour later.
As many of Uruguay's 2.6 million registered voters took to the polls Sunday to choose a successor to President Tabare Vazquez and also elect a new Congress.
