Venice Film Festival opens

VENICE, ITALY (dpa)- The 74th Venice International Film Festival has opened with a premiere screening of Alexander Payne's "Downsizing" at the gala in the Sala Grande theatre.
The satirical film's main stars, Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig, and director Payne had appeared on the red carpet earlier on Wednesday evening ahead of the screening.

"Downsizing" - the latest work from double Oscar-winner Payne ("Sideways," "The Descendants") - tells the story of a future world in which people have shrunk themselves to reduce their environmental impact on the planet.
A further advantage of miniature living is that everything is cheaper and people can enjoy greater prosperity.
There are 20 other films in competition for the top prize, the Golden Lion, which will be awarded by the jury on September 9.
