Ailing 'Columbo' star's wife named his guardian

LOS ANGELES- A court has appointed the wife of US actor Peter Falk to control the affairs of the ailing "Columbo" TV star as he battles dementia, legal officials said Tuesday.
A Los Angeles court named Shera Falk as the "conservator" to take care of her 81-year-old husband after a bitter battle with the actor's adoptive daughter Catherine Falk.

Catherine Falk filed papers in December stating the veteran actor was no longer able to take care of himself because of his deteriorating health and that he should be placed under a conservatorship order to protect him.
Judge Aviva Bobb on Monday awarded conservatorship to Falk's wife of 32 years after a 45-minute hearing. Catherine Falk will be allowed to visit her father every other month at the home of a Beverley Hills neighbor.
A doctor told the court that he had been shocked by the sudden decline in the actor's health over the past year, which was so severe he couldn't even remember the television detective show which made him famous.
"I was really chagrined that he didn't even remember 'Colombo,'" Stephen Read testified.
Born in New York in 1927, Falk began his acting career on Broadway in 1956, quickly coming to the attention of Hollywood studios.
He was twice nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar, playing a gangster in 1960's "Murder Inc" and 1961's "Pocketful of Miracles."
But he is best known was as the trenchcoat wearing, cigar-smoking Lieutenant Columbo in the long-running television series which aired from 1968 and 2003.
Falk has worn a glass eye most of his life after his right eye was removed at the age of the three because of a tumor.
Catherine Falk and her sister Jacqueline were adopted when Falk was married to his first wife, Alyce Mayo.
