Anne Hathaway tapped to play Judy Garland

LOS ANGELES, (AFP) - Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway has been tapped to play singer Judy Garland on both stage and screen, US media reported Tuesday.
The 26-year-old actress has signed a contract with movie giant The Weinstein Company to give life to Garland, who played the legendary Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz" (1939).

The project is based on "Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland," a biography by Gerald Clarke.
"You get an enhanced perspective of Judy Garland through this book and we feel Anne can really put her own stamp on that," Weinstein vice president of production and development Ben Famiglietti told Variety.
Details of the project, including whether the theater or film production would come first, were not released.
Hathaway, known for her roles in "Brokeback Mountain," "The Devil Wears Prada" and "The Princess Diaries," was nominated for best actress at the Oscars this year for her role in "Rachel Getting Married."
During the Oscars ceremony in February, she sang and danced a brief Andalusian musical piece with Australian actor Hugh Jackman.
