Another star cancellation for Vienna's 'Carmen'

VIENNA- Latvian operatic superstar, mezzo soprano Elina Garanca, has pulled out of next month's performances of Bizet's "Carmen", the Vienna State Opera announced Friday, the third artist for health reasons to withdraw from the production.
The opera's outgoing chief Ioan Holender had assembled an all-star cast for a short run of five performances of one of the most popular operas of all time: Garanca in the title role alongside Mexican tenor Rolando Villazon as Don Jose and Russian soprano Anna Netrebko as Micaela, with Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons in the pit.

Holender is stepping down at the end of the current season and "Carmen" was to have been his farewell gift to the house he has headed for the past 18 years.
But things already started to go awry last year, when Villazon announced he would have to cancel so he could undergo surgery on his vocal chords.
And just a few days ago, it was announced that maestro Jansons would not be able to conduct the five performances, also due to ill health. "Carmen" would have marked the conductor's house debut in Vienna.
Then on Friday, the state opera announced that Garanca would also not take part in the prduction.
In a letter, the singer's management had revealed that Garanca was still feeling "exhausted and off-colour" after undergoing minor surgery earlier this month.
And she therefore did not feel "physically able to sing the five performances".
Her doctors had advised her to rest until the end of May, the letter stated.
The performances will now be conducted by one of Jansons's upcoming young proteges, 32-year-old fellow Latvian Andris Nelsons.
Italian tenor Massimo Giordano is replacing Villazon and Bulgarian mezzo soprano Nadia Krasteva will sing in Garanca's place.
The opera house insisted that Netrebko would still sing the role of Micaela.
But observers were nevertheless speculating that she might pull out as well, after she cancelled a number of performances of Bellini's "I Puritani" in Vienna this month due to illness.
