Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor had the leading roles in the film, which took in $179 million at the box office worldwide, according to specialist website Box Office Mojo.
The film was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Kidman. It won two: for best art and set direction, and for best costume design.
For its stage incarnation, the book will be created by US playwright John Logan, who wrote "Red", a play about artist Mark Rothko that won a 2010 Tony as Best Play.
Logan's film work includes "The Aviator," "Gladiator," "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" and "Spectre," the latest James Bond film.
The director of the "Moulin Rouge!" stage musical will be Alex Timbers, co-creator and co-executive producer of the television show "Mozart in the Jungle," broadcast by Amazon and winner of two Golden Globe awards this year.
The Tony-nominated director has won awards for New York shows including "Peter and the Starcatcher" and the musical "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson".
