Some started using the hashtag #TussaudsSoWhite as a play on #OscarsSoWhite, which started trending in reaction to the controversy over the lack of black actors nominated for Academy Awards.
A spokesperson for the museum initially rejected the criticism, saying the lighting and flash photography were likely to be at fault for making the likeness’s skin tone seem lighter than her real-life counterpart's in photos.
However, on Thursday the spokesperson confirmed the waxwork had been removed for repairs and on Friday Beyonce was back on display - with a few tweaks.
"We love, respect and enjoy a working relationship with Beyonce. We have adjusted the styling and lighting of her figure and she is on display at Madame Tussauds New York," the museum said.
