The Filmfare Awards, now in their 55th year, are often referred to as the Oscars of the Hindi-language movie industry. They take their name from a magazine owned by the same publishing group as the daily newspaper.
Bachchan senior is nominated for a best actor award for the film "Paa," or "Father," which sees him play a child with the rapid-ageing condition progeria. In a role reversal, Bachchan junior plays the character's father.
The film, which came out last year, is nominated for awards in six categories, including best film.
But Amitabh Bachchan wrote on his blog http://bigb.bigadda.com/ overnight Friday-Saturday that the family had not received a public apology from the newspaper for alleging earlier this month that Rai could not have children.
A legal notice had been sent demanding a retraction and apology, he added.
"We have informed Filmfare that neither will Aishwarya be performing at the event, for which all preparations had been made and neither shall any of us be attending," he wrote.
"Paa" director R. Balki, nominated in the best director category, will also not be attending in a "voluntary decision of solidarity," Bachchan added.
Abhishek, who married Rai in April 2007 in what was billed as "the wedding of the year," wrote on the micro-blogging site Twitter: "Many have asked. NO I will NOT be attending Filmfare tonight."
He added under his username "juniorbachchan": "Had hoped that it would not have come to this, but if MM (Mumbai Mirror) is going to be unrelenting in their stand of NO APOLOGY. THEN SO AM I!"
