Chief conductor of Hungarian National Opera to step down

BUDAPEST- The chief conductor of the Hungarian National Opera, Adam Fischer, has decided to step down, Hungarian media reported Monday, days after the opera's director was fired over financial irregularities.
In an interview with the daily Nepszabadsag published on the newspaper's website, Fischer blamed government interference in the institution's affairs for wanting to leave.

"Whatever happens, everyone runs to see a politician friend, and that friend will see about getting what they want," he said.
On Friday, the government had fired opera director Lajos Vass, after an audit revealed financial irregularities and debts.
"We can say that the leaders have squandered the opera's funds," Gabor Hardy, who undertook the audit of the opera's finances at the request of the national resources ministry, told MTI news agency.
The opera's deficit was more than one billion forint (3.6 million euros, five million dollars), he noted.
Meanwhile, the institution had already spent 90 million forint from the European Union, which had been put aside to organise a series of events marking Hungary's EU presidency from 1 January 2011, he added.
Fischer, who specialises in works by Haydn, Mozart, Wagner and Bela Bartok, will conduct four more concerts this season under his current contract, before throwing in the towel, Nepszabadsag said.
But this might not be the end of his cooperation with the opera, the ministerial commissioner appointed to check the opera's balance sheets, Adam Horvath, told AFP.
"We will count on his work in the future as well," he said.
