Cruz hopes to bring Oscar home for Spain
The 34-year-old Spanish star of Woody Allen's "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" is up against Viola Davis and Amy Adams for "Doubt," Marisa Tomei for "The Wrestler," and Taraji P. Henson for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button".
"This nomination is an honour and means a lot to me," said Cruz, who has starred opposite Hollywood A-listers Tom Cruise, Nicolas Cage and Johnny Depp in films such as "Vanilla Sky", "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" and "Blow."
"I am eternally indebted to the Academy (and) to Woody Allen who gave me this opportunity. I am very happy to see all the affection and congratulations I have received, especially those from Spain.
"Let's hope I can bring it home," she added in her statement.
Cruz was nominated for best performance by an actress in a leading role in 2007 for "Volver," by Spanish director and longtime career mentor Pedro Almodovar.
The 81st annual Academy Awards will be held on February 22 at Hollywood's Kodak Theater.
