Historic wooden church in Czech Republic destroyed by fire

PRAGUE (dpa) - One of the Czech Republic's oldest wooden churches was completely destroyed by a fire overnight, the Czech fire brigade reported on Wednesday.
Corpus Christi Church in the village of Guty, part of the city of Trinec in the east of the country, dated back to the year 1563. The cause of the overnight fire was not yet known.

When firefighters arrived, the church, which was built from massive wooden trunks, was already engulfed in flames. Damages are estimated to be in the millions of euros.
The church, which was first Lutheran and subsequently became Roman Catholic, was ornately decorated inside and had been extensively restored between 2012 and 2014. Czech Culture Minister Daniel Herman had already pledged support for the church's rebuilding.
