Hollywood calling for hero captain held by pirates

LOS ANGELES- The attempted hijacking of a cargo ship by Somali pirates and hostage-taking of a US merchant captain last month is to get the big screen treatment, Hollywood press said on Friday.
Columbia Pictures has bought the film rights to Richard Phillips' story -- the seaman who gave himself up to Somali pirates in return for the free passage of his crew.

"We were drawn to this remarkable story of heroism and courage as events were unfolding off the coast of Africa," Columbia executive Doug Belgrad told the industry publication Variety.
No director or screenwriter has yet been named for the project, but in the running to produce the film are actor Kevin Spacey, Scott Rudin (No Country for Old Men), Michael DeLuca (American History X) and Dana Brunetti (21).
Phillips has become a hero in the United States for his role as captain of the Maersk Alabama, which was attacked in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Somalia.
He was then involved in a bloody rescue by elite US Navy SEAL commandos. Three pirates were killed in the operation and a fourth was flown to New York, where he faced trial for piracy.
