Indian film star banned from elections over gun crimes

India's supreme court on Tuesday refused to suspend the conviction of Bollywood film star Sanjay Dutt, ending his attempt to win a seat in upcoming general elections.
Dutt, who is on bail over a weapons conviction, had been campaigning to represent the city of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh state on behalf of the socialist Samajwadi Party.

The court rejected Dutt's plea, saying it would set the wrong precedent to allow him to run in the April 16 - May 13 elections.
The 49-year-old, who remains one of Bollywood's biggest stars, was found guilty in 2007 of possessing illegal weapons that he bought from men accused of plotting the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts in which more than 250 people died.
The actor, who admits he used to be a heavy drug user, was sentenced to six years in jail, but was later released on bail pending an appeal.
Uttar Pradesh is regarded as crucial in the elections as it is India's most populous state and sends 80 MPs to the 545-member national parliament.
A study by an Indian watchdog found that nearly a quarter of the 542 people elected to the federal parliament in 2004 had faced criminal charges, including murder and rape.
