International theatre festival opens in Transylvania

BUCHAREST- The international theatre festival in the Transylvanian city of Sibiu, one of the most important in Europe, opened Friday for a ten-day dive into Japanese and European theatre.
"Japan has a very tight relationship with the Sibiu theatre festival. There are three Japanese companies this year inspired by the folklore in the region hit by the earthquake and the tsunami" in April, Japan's ambassador to Romania Natsuo Amemiya told a press conference.

The presence of theatre companies Dazzle, Yamanote Jijosha and Yukio Suzuki Company is supported by a masterclass on traditional Japanese theatre aesthetics and techniques used in the contemporary shows.
About 70 Japanese cultural figures are to attend the festival to buy Romanian productions, festival director Constantin Chiriac said.
Other plays come from Belgium, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and the United States.
They are staged in the mediaeval squares of the former European cultural capital, with the aim of attracting people who have never been to theatre before.
