John Travolta takes part in the French TV talk show 'Le Grand Journal' in December 2008.
"It's impossible to keep a secret... especially one as wonderful as this," the statement read. "We want to be the first to share this great news with everyone that we are expecting a new addition to our family."
Travolta and Preston, who have been married since 1991, were plunged into mourning in January 2009 when their autistic eldest child, Jett, 16, died from a seizure during a family holiday in the Bahamas. Travolta and Preston have a daughter, Ella Bleu, 10.
In an interview with People Magazine in 2007, Travolta had spoken of his desire to add to his family, saying he and Preston were "trying for a third, but that depends on Kelly's schedule."
"I really like having kids," he told the magazine. "I enjoy their energy and it keeps everything wonderful and hopeful. I grew up with six kids in my family. I thought I would have five or six."
News of the Travoltas' pregnancy comes as the family grieve the loss of two of the family dogs, who were killed in an accident last week at an airport in Maine, where the couple has a holiday home.
