La Scala announces 2009-10 programme

MILAN - Milan's La Scala will open its 2009-2010 season with Bizet's "Carmen," under the baton of Emma Dante, the opera house's director Stephane Lissner announced Tuesday.
The Sicilian director's take on Georges Bizet's Seville-set opus is the first of nine new productions and will open the new season on December 7, the feast day of Milan's patron, Saint Ambrose.

A new working of Wagner's "Ring" cycle directed by Belgian Guy Cassiers will open in May 2010.
Spanish tenor Placido Domingo -- who recently denied a Times of London report following an interview given to the newspaper that he was quitting the opera stage to concentrate on recitals -- will star in Verdi's "Simon Boccanegra" next April.
Domingo is slated to give a Wagner recital on December 9 to celebrate 40 years since his first appearance at La Scala.
The new programme also marks the return of conductor Claudi Abbado, who was musical director at the opera house for 18 years.
Abbado will conduct a Gustav Mahler symphony on June 4 and 6, and demanded that Milan plant 90,000 new trees in the city in exchange, ANSA news agency reported.
Milan Mayor Letizia Moratti said of her desire to see a permanent return that Abbado just "has to tell us what he wants to come back."
