Malkovich to take serial killer opera around Europe

KARLOVY VARY - Hollywood star John Malkovich said Thursday that he will tour Europe with his new play-opera about a serial killer.
Malkovich plays Jack Unterweger, an Austrian who killed several prostitutes, turned to writing and journalism whilst in prison but who ended up committing suicide.

"I do not feel there is a sensibility I cannot understand," Malkovich said at the Karlovy Vary film festival.
"If somebody was writing a fantastic version of Catherine the Great, could I play her? Yes. Why not, so the rest is just execution, I never feel ever that I can't enter any character."
"The Infernal Comedy: Confessions of a Serial Killer" is a monologue interspersed with opera pieces.
It will be shown at the Peralada festival in Spain in July before going on to London, Paris, Bilbao, Spain and Madrid, Malkovich said.
The actor said he was working on other projects but a planned film, "Love and Virtue", by Chilean director Raoul Ruiz has been called off because of finance problems.
"As far as I know the film got lost in the shuffle of paperwork," he said. "I thought when I read it that it might have budgetary problems, it seemed rather expensive."
Malkovich, 56, was to receive a special award at the Czech festival for his career work.
