Meryl Streep eyeing Margaret Thatcher biopic: report

LOS ANGELES- Oscar-winner Meryl Streep is in talks to play "Iron Lady" Margaret Thatcher in a biopic about the former British Prime Minister, The Hollywood Reporter said Thursday.
Streep, 61, is in negotiations to reunite with "Mamma Mia!" director Phylidda Lloyd for the film -- "Thatcher" -- which will focus on the period shortly before the 1982 Falklands War between Britain and Argentina.

If confirmed, it would be the highest profile role yet tackled by Streep, a chameleon of the big screen who has already played real-life women including whistle-blower Karen Silkwood and television chef Julia Child.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the planned biopic will be set in the 17 days before the Falklands War as Thatcher -- Britain's first woman Prime Minister -- is battling to save her career.
The Falklands War is often regarded as a turning point in Thatcher's career, sending her popularity soaring and helping her right-wing Conservative Party score a landslide election win in 1983.
Veteran British actor Jim Broadbent is in talks to play Thatcher's husband, Denis, the report said.
