"The 2010 programme for Salzburg is complete and for 2011 only one production is missing," he told the Krone Zeitung newspaper. "The work is almost done, and I will be available for the busy periods of the 2010 and 2011 festival."
Monday's announcement that Flimm, 67, will begin a five-year stint at the Staatsoper from September 1, 2010, brought protests from Salzburg mayor Heinz Schaden, saying he was bound by his contract with the Austrian city.
Flimm said earlier this month he would not stay on as artistic director of the Salzburg Festival, one of the world's most prominent summer arts festivals, after his contract runs out in 2011.
His decision to throw in the towel came after a bitter dispute with the festival's drama chief, Thomas Oberender, over the standing of spoken theatre within the month-long festival of music, opera and plays.
Flimm reminded Krone Zeitung that he had organised the 2005 to 2007 Salzburg festivals while also running Germany's Ruhr Triennial, adding, "Such things happen frequently."
He will arrive in the cash-strapped German capital amid a bitter row over financing for Berlin's three opera houses, costly holdovers from the city's 28-year division.
