In second came another rematch, "Terminator: Salvation," starring Welsh-born actor Christian Bale in the post-apocalyptic role of a resistance leader fighting power-hungry machines, taking just over 65.3 million dollars in box office receipts, also in its first weekend.
At number three was another franchise flick, the critically acclaimed blockbuster "Star Trek," which stays near the top of the box office, beaming up 22.89 million dollars in its third weekend.
Rounding out the franchise reboots was "Angels and Demons" -- sequel to the hit 2006 thriller "The Da Vinci Code." Directed by Ron Howard and with Tom Hanks reprising his starring turn, the "Angels" took fourth place with 21.7 million dollars.
In its first weekend "Dance Flick," a predictably plotted dance-themed movie about a street dancer from the wrong side of the tracks bonding with a beautiful girl to battle it out at a dance competition, took fifth place with 10.6 million dollars.
Superhero spinoff "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which claimed the best debut of the year three weekends earlier with 87 million dollars, netted just eight million this weekend for a distant sixth place.
In seventh was romantic comedy "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past," starring Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner, earning 3.8 million dollars, also in its fourth week.
Superstar singer Beyonce's taut thriller "Obsessed" slipped three spots to eighth with two million dollars, while "Monsters vs Aliens," an animated tale of a rag-tag group of monsters who save the world from destruction, came in ninth with 1.9 million dollars in receipts.
Youthful fantasy "17 Again," starring US teen idol Zac Efron, fell three places to round out the top 10, with a one-million-dollar take.
