He wrote in German, Polish and English about his experiences and memories of the Holocaust, earning Austria's Manes-Sperber literary prize last year for his life's work.
His father was arrested and shot by the Nazis in 1941 and he also lost his mother during World War II, but Zielinski survived the Holocaust.
In 1957, he moved to Austria and a year later he obtained Austrian citizenship.
But although he had studied social sciences and journalism at the universities of Krakow and Warsaw, he then spent most of his life in trading, founding his own company which operated until 1989, and traveling extensively to China and Hong Kong.
Among Zielinski's most important works, which are especially popular in his native Poland, is a volume entitled "Twelve Jewish Tales," published last year.
His last book "Im Stetl" ("In the Shtetl") is due to come out in August.
