'Race to Witch Mountain' casts spell on box office



Disney's latest production, "Race to Witch Mountain," kicked off the weekend with an early lead at the North American box office, preliminary figures showed Sunday.
The adventure and science-fiction family flick pocketed 25 million dollars, outpacing "Watchmen" by director Zack Snyder of "300" fame, according to figures released by industry tracker Exhibitor Relations.

"Race to Witch Mountain" is inspired by Disney's 1975 production "Escape to Witch Mountain," which was followed by the sequel "Return from Witch Mountain."
Acclaimed as a faithful adaptation of Alan Moore's classic graphic novel, "Watchmen," which follows the lives of numerous superheroes in an alternate 1985 America, took in 18.1 million dollars, a 67 percent drop from a week ago.
Horror remake "The Last House on the Left" scared up 14.7 million dollars, landing it into third place. In the film based on Wes Craven's 1972 movie by the same name, parents take revenge on a gang that kidnapped and assaulted their daughter.
Fox thriller "Taken" came in fourth with 6.7 million dollars, ahead of comedy "Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail," which scored 5.1 million dollars.
Multi-Oscar winner "Slumdog Millionaire" fell to sixth place, cashing in five million dollars this weekend, for a total of 132.6 million in 18 weeks of showing.
In seventh place, "Paul Blart Mall Cop" -- the tale of a security guard turned hero -- took in 3.1 million dollars in sales.
With an all-star cast featuring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Aniston, romantic comedy "He's Just Not That Into You" continued its slide into eight spot with tales of modern dating disasters, earning 2.9 million dollars in sales.
In ninth, animated children's adventure "Coraline" which earned 2.7 million dollars.
New release "Miss March" came in a disappointing 10th place, bringing in 2.4 million dollars for the racy comedy.
Weekend numbers for the top 12 films were down 15.75 percent from the same period last year, with 89.2 million dollars this year compared to 105.9 a year ago. The top film the same weekend last year, Fox's "Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!" debuted at 45 million dollars.
