Sean Penn sentenced for paparazzi scuffle

LOS ANGELES- Oscar-winner Sean Penn was sentenced to three years' probation and ordered to undergo anger management counseling Wednesday after pleading no contest to a charge arising from a confrontation with a photographer last year.
Penn, 49, a two-time best actor Oscar-winner for his performances in "Mystic River" and "Milk," must also perform 300 hours of community service in connection with the October 2 incident.

Penn's plea related to a misdemeanor charge of vandalism. A second misdemeanor charge of battery was dismissed. The actor was not required to appear in court for Wednesday's hearing because both charges were misdemeanors.
Los Angeles City Attorney's Office spokesman Frank Mateljan said Penn must also stay 100 yards away from the photographer involved in the altercation.
Penn has a history of violent confrontations with photographers. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail in 1987, serving roughly half that time behind bars, after attacking a photographer on a film set.
