'The Rite' leads North American weekend box office

LOS ANGELES- Exorcism thriller "The Rite" cast out its demons to reach the top of the North American box office in its debut weekend, industry figures showed Monday.
The Anthony Hopkins horror flick inspired by 1970s classic "The Exorcist" captured $14.8 million in just over 3,000 theaters, despite poor reviews by critics.

In third place new release "The Mechanic" made $11.4 million, just ahead of action movie "The Green Hornet" on $11.1 million.
Other films basked in the glow of an Oscars nomination bump.
During its 10th week in theaters, British historical drama "The King's Speech" was in the fifth spot after drawing 12 nominations from the Oscars race. It earned $11.1 million, for a total of $72.2 million so far.
The Western "True Grit" came in sixth, with $7.5 million.
Oscar-winning brothers Joel and Ethan Coen's remake features Jeff Bridges in the John Wayne role as a drunken, hard-nosed US marshal. The film has earned $148.3 million in six weeks.

The film earned Welsh-born Christian Bale a Golden Globe for best supporting actor for his portrayal of the junkie brother of boxer Micky Ward, a performance that overshadowed the film's star, Mark Wahlberg, who also received strong reviews.
Family film "Yogi Bear" rounded out the top 10 with $3.2 million in its seventh week.
