Thousands in first Warsaw Epiphany procession in 50 years

WARSAW- Tens of thousands of people, many in colourful exotic costumes, attended Warsaw's first Epiphany procession in half a century Thursday, led by the legendary Three Kings bearing precious gifts for newborn Jesus Christ.
The Feast of Epiphany, which marks the event 12 days after Jesus' birth, was abolished by the communists 50 years ago, even though Poles are predominantly Catholic, and only re-established this year.

The restoration followed a lengthy legal battle in parliament, pitting the powerful Roman Catholic Church against employers who are opposed to an additional day off.
Thursday's procession, with the three Magi (Wise Men) on horseback, wound its way through Warsaw's old town to Pilsudski square where the gift-bearing ceremony, believed to have taken place in Bethlehem, was re-enacted.
In the Bible, the three Magi -- Melchior, Caspar and Balthasar -- followed a star to Bethlehem bearing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh for the baby Jesus.
The tradition of offering gifts is perpetuated in several Catholic countries where children are given presents on January 6, and not Christmas.
