British singer Boy George tweeted "Sending my prayers to Molly Meldrum in Australia!" while Hollywood star Russell Crowe also sent his support, saying "Sending Ian Meldrum love. Thinking of you mate."
Meldrum is friends with many of the top names in the business and has conducted interviews with figures from John Lennon and Mick Jagger to Madonna and Michael Jackson.
The brain surgeon who operated on him overnight said the next 24 hours were critical.
"We're really concerned for his life. It's a life and death matter," neurosurgeon Jeffrey Rosenfeld told reporters, adding that Meldrum was in a "deep coma" with a "severe brain injury".
