Legend of the French stage and film, Laurent Terzieff, in April 2010
Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand celebrated his passion and tireless work that would leave "an unforgettable mark."
Laurent Terzieff died on Friday in Paris.
Legendary directors including Luis Bunuel, Jean-Luc Godard and Pier Paolo Pasolini had all cast Terzieff in their films, though the Frenchman dedicated much of his career to acting and directing for the stage.
President of the Cannes Film Festival, Gilles Jacob, said Terzieff was an example to all artists, "immense" for his talent as well as his modesty.
Christian Schiaretti, who directed Terzieff in his last play on stage at the Paris Odeon theatre, said he was an actor who "embodied the true values of the theatre: integrity and humanity."
Olivier Py, the Odeon theatre's artistic director, said Terzieff's "voice still resonates" in the auditorium, "clear, strong, absolutely unique."
