Vienna Philharmonic pays birthday tribute to Maazel

VIENNA- American conductor Lorin Maazel celebrates his 80th birthday this weekend conducting the Vienna Philharmonic in the Austrian capital.
Topping the programme of Saturday's performance at the Musikverein concert hall will be the world premiere of a suite taken from Maazel's opera "1984", based on the novel of the same name by George Orwell.

Maazel will also conduct Claude Debussy's symphonic suite "La Mer" and Maurice Ravel's "Daphnis et Chloe".
The world-renowned orchestra views the birthday concert as a sort of homage to Maazel, who has conducted the orchestra at its renowned New Year's concert 11 times, said Vienna Philharmonic spokesman Clemens Hellsberg.
Maazel, born to American parents in France, on March 6, 1930, was a child prodigy violinist, conductor and later composer.
He first conducted the Vienna Philharmonic in 1962, when he was asked to stand in for Herbert von Karajan. He was made an honorary member in 2002.
