Water damage forces Berlin opera house to stage down 'Swan Lake'

BERLIN (dpa)- The stage will be bare and only partially illuminated when the Berlin ballet company performs "Swan Lake" this month at the city's Deutsche Oper after a defective sprinkler system flooded the stage and caused water damage on Christmas Eve.
The opera house's stage machinery was damaged by the flooding and remains inoperable, meaning that all January performances of "Swan Lake" will occur on a "black stage" without scenery or full lighting, the Berlin State Ballet company said on Thursday.

The performances will, as usual, feature an orchestra, costumes and masks, the company said.
"Those who would not like to to experience this unique form of presentation can receive a refund of the ticket price," it said.
