Industry tracker Exhibitor Relations said the number two film was "Watchmen" a faithful screen adaptation of Alan Moore's classic graphic novel of the same name, which earned 17.8 million dollars in ticket sales.
Horror remake "The Last House on the Left" scared up 14.1 million dollars, landing it into third place. Based on Wes Craven's 1972 movie of the same name, the film deals with parents take revenge on a gang that kidnapped and assaulted their daughter.
Fox thriller "Taken" came in fourth place with 6.6 million dollars, ahead of comedy "Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail," which scored 5.1 million dollars.
Multi-Oscar winner "Slumdog Millionaire" fell to sixth place, reaping five million dollars this weekend, for a total of 132.6 million in 18 weeks since its release.
In seventh place, "Paul Blart Mall Cop" -- the tale of a security guard turned hero -- took in 3.1 million dollars in sales.
With an all-star cast featuring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Aniston, romantic comedy "He's Just Not That Into You" continued its slide, falling to eighth place with its tale of modern dating disasters, earning 2.9 million dollars in sales.
In ninth was animated children's adventure "Coraline" which earned 2.7 million dollars.
Racy comedy "Miss March" debuted at a disappointing 10th place, bringing in 2.4 million dollars.
